All You Need is ‘Awareness’
Keeping High Performance Teams Simple and Effective

The Beatles said it best in their song “All you need is love” when attempting to help unify the cultures and people around them. If we took that unification concept a step further to add “All you need is awareness” then we would have the perfect ingredients for a High-Performance Team in a business environment, beating every goal and winning as a collective group.

Building and sustaining high performing teams has become critical for organizational success. Keeping the concepts simple and relatable to others provides the greatest advantage and this starts with aware leaders who lead from their higher self. Aware leaders view the team as a truly united entity, they help develop team members intrinsically and they recognize and celebrate wins coming from people of equal value, no matter what their job role or level.

So, what exactly is a “HIGH PERFORMING TEAM”? Organizational experts have interpreted the concept in customized ways over the past several decades, but the most common definition of a High-Performance Team is this:

A High Performing Team is a synergistic group of individuals with complementary skills and expertise, working together towards a common vision and goals, and consistently achieving exceptional results. Team members are inspired to work from their own higher selves. Not only do they bring their best selves to the party, but they also understand everyone else is doing the same, so the most empathetic and intuitive collaboration is achieved.

THE WINNING INGREDIENTS FOR HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS

Higher self-leaders are masterful at assembling teams, building a marriage of the right individuals, uniting new team members with existing ones and using intuition and awareness to map each individual’s unique superpowers. Whether recruiting or developing an existing team or preferably both, there are several factors or ingredients which will be a common approach these leaders take to create a high performing team.

• Clear Mission and Vision – High-Performance Team Leaders drive an inspiring mission and relatable vision, using an inclusive leadership style that involves and engages team members. These pieces provide a roadmap for the company, guiding its decisions, strategies, and actions. A compelling vision and rousing mission not only resonate with employees and attractive candidates, but also attracts investors, partners, and other stakeholders who share similar values and aspirations. A powerful vision inspires and motivates employees, stakeholders, and even customers, giving them a sense of purpose and belonging, fostering enthusiasm and dedication towards achieving shared objectives.

• Next Level A Team – Recruit individuals whose personal values align with the company’s values and behaviors. Also look for diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives that complement each other and contribute to the team’s overall effectiveness. Encourage team members to connect with their intuition and to be self-aware of their unique superpowers and areas for growth. There are many lenses you can tap into to identify strengths and opportunities for growth. Examine hard skills you might be looking for as well as personality and leadership qualities. Myers Briggs for example is a good leveler to identify personality types and the level of balance on the team. Knowing the gaps can open up great development opportunities for existing team members.

• Clear Strategies for How to Win – Teams must create a set of cross-functional goals and strategies using an inclusive process, and rational and intuitive decision-making skills to ensure an air-tight link to the company’s Mission. Linked and equally important is an operating plan to define how these goals will be met, inclusive of measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that the team can collectively work towards. As a higher self-leader, inspire others by connecting the team’s vision and goals to a larger purpose and fostering unity consciousness. It’s not just about producing a vision on paper, its about connecting with the whole team and invoking their intrinsic motivation so the vision means something to them. Bonds between the team members allow them to seamlessly coordinate their work to achieve both efficiency and effectiveness.

• Alignment, Trust & Commitment- Trust in the company entity and trust in team members is an imperative piece. Support a team culture that is diverse, open, equitable, transparent, positive, and able to deliver success. This will inspire a culture of courage to be bold, innovative and thoughtful. Self-aware High Performance Teams leaders harness thinking, ideas and energy of all the people on an ongoing basis, as it relates to propelling mission forward. Involvement, contribution an alignment of all team players around the vision and mission will inspire the commitment needed to succeed as a business.

• Positive Team Culture – Cultivate an environment that encourages open communication, trust, mutual respect, and psychological safety among team members. Higher self leaders promote unity consciousness by modelling and encouraging empathy, compassion, and understanding within the team. The best way to achieve this is to develop a culture of honest, open and transparent communication at every opportunity. People need to be able to be themselves and when not at their best, they should have the freedom to be able to say so. Additionally ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) work wonders so developing unique teams for purpose, inventing a branded name and logo even, fosters major culture unity.

• Clear Roles and Responsibilities – Each team member understands what they must do (and not do) to demonstrate their commitment to the team and to support team success. Ensure that roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations are clearly defined, understood, and accepted by each team member. Empower team members by providing opportunities for them to take ownership of their work, fostering a connection to their higher selves. If boundaries are blurred, valuable time is lost. Individual effort must be valued as much as a team effort and vice versa. Sharing accountability correctly can be extremely empowering for team members.

• Continuous Learning– The people of a company make the company. Continuous training, development and improvement are an evolution of each team member and the high performance team. Ensure ultra clarity on career pathing and succession planning. Offer training, coaching, mentoring, and other resources to help team members grow, improve, and stay engaged. Encourage self-awareness and personal development by fostering a growth mindset and providing ongoing constructive feedback. Also promote a culture of learning from mistakes, embracing feedback, and pursuing continuous improvement. Encourage team members to reflect on their actions and decisions, cultivating self-awareness and personal growth. Continually intending, acting and reflecting should be an established pattern.

• Data and One Understood Scorecard – Commitment and engagement are gained when the team works and wins together with one scorecard, populated by SMART goals that have sustenance, personal meaning, and can be measured and rewarded timely. Utilizing data and metrics in business management is paramount for informed decision-making and strategic planning. By analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs), market trends, and customer behavior, businesses can gain valuable insights into their operations, identify areas for improvement, and capitalize on opportunities for growth. A clear data-informed scorecard not only enhances operational efficiency but also minimizes risks and maximizes returns on investments. Moreover, it fosters a culture of accountability and transparency within the organization, enabling teams to track progress towards goals and adapt strategies accordingly. In today’s competitive landscape, leveraging data and metrics is not just advantageous—it’s essential for staying ahead of the curve and achieving sustainable success.

• Celebrate Wins –Establish the meaning of success, define its shape, color and purpose and celebrate it every step of the way. Winning is fun. Remind people every day with recognition. Regularly review and assess team performance and recognize achievements to maintain motivation and commitment. As a higher self leader, celebrate successes in a way that highlights unity consciousness and the contributions of each team member. The most important role of a leader is to instill a sense of pride and belonging in all people in the team, so the expression “needs more cow bell” has a serious meaning. Ring the bell on a regular basis.

HOW DO WE KNOW IT’S WORKING?

To ensure your high-performing team isn’t just a buzzword but a reality, a structured approach is necessary to embed essential elements. Key areas such as Environment, Behavior, Capabilities, Beliefs and Values, Identity, and Vision should be consistently measured and evaluated.

  1. Utilizing data and surveys, progress in each area can be tracked effectively. Data collection on physical conditions and external factors allows for improvements in the environment.
  2. Behavioral metrics, 360-degree feedback, and observational data help measure behavior.
  3. Progress in capabilities is assessed through tracking skill development and training completion rates.
  4. Surveys provide insights into employees’ attitudes and alignment with organizational values, evaluating beliefs and values.
  5. Qualitative interviews and assessments of self-concept and leadership presence capture changes in identity.
  6. Operations plans can be used to track key performance indicators and strategic goal attainment, thus measuring progress in realizing the mission and vision.
